| Car of the Month - January 2003 | |
Chris Pecoraro's 1977 Mach 1
I got the car when I was 16. It was sitting out in a field on my cousin's ranch. The car was originally owned by my Great Uncle, but he no longer wanted it. He gave it to me for free, but I had to promise him that I would restore it. It was in bad shape. We had to tow it out of three feet of red clay. When I first saw it, I thought I would never get it done. It still has the original 302 in it with only 47k miles on it! It had 34k on it when I got it. I drove it around and saved my money for about a year. Everyone made fun of it. They all said it was a piece of junk, but I knew better.
The first thing I did was put new tires on it and a flowmaster exhaust system. These smog blocks have a mean sound to them when you install a good exhaust on it. Then the car's sound had everyone talking. I went from having a hi-po 289 to a 347 stroker according to rumor. I drove it around like that until the fall of 2001. I had now saved up enough money to get to work. The first thing I did was remove all the old suspension. I sanded it down and refinished every bit of it by hand. It has new ball joints, control arms, shocks, springs, leaf springs, and has polyurethane bushing all the way around, which made a world of difference. Next, some friends and I pulled out the motor, cleaned it up and repainted it, and then installed an Edelbrock 500 cfm four barrel carb, an Edelbrock performer RPM intake, a new water pump, Accel Super Stock coil, Delco Rapidfire plugs and Belden 9mm wires, chrome valve covers, ford motorsport air cleaner and holley powershot filter. Then the car was ready for paint. It took 2.5 months to do all the body work and paint. It also took the same amount of time to have my rims custom made for the car. I have 15x8's in the rear and 15x7's up front. The tire size in the rear is a set of 225/50/15's and up front are 205/50/15's. As far as the paint, it's all dupont, and I had a cobra chin spoiler installed, a cobra rear spoiler installed, and a 1969 Boss Mustang hood scoop fabricated to the hood, and it is fully functional! It's been a long, plastic burning (if you know what I mean) journey, but it was all worth it in the end. I get all kinds of compliments, and I am happy to say that I have a car that is unique and respected.
